Doug McCain was born in 1959, the son of Carol McCain and her first husband. He was adopted in 1966 by John McCain after John and Carol were married. McCain grew up in a close-knit Naval community in Florida, though his father was absent for much of his childhood, serving overseas, and as a P.O.W. He flew jets in the Navy and is now a pilot for American Airlines.
